“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly:
and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”
(Proverbs 18:24)
How do you describe a friend? There never seems to be a word, or words, big enough. It’s just too big a subject to use words already written, sung or spoken. I will ask largely for a new word.
I have a friend who sticketh closer than a brother You ask who that may be I say He is like no other His name above all names too holy to pronounce I just call him Jesus He's been my friend Since I was but a child
“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art … It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”
C.S. Lewis
“I no doubt deserved my enemies, but I don’t believe I deserved my friends.”
Walt Whitman

You know I love that C.S. Lewis quote, and I’m grateful that you are my friend!

Please excuse my delay, dear Dan, and thank you not only for your kind comment, but also for sharing this space with me!

I identify with Walt Whitman on this right away and hope CS Lewis is reaching for a point. Perhaps friendship as a concept is unnecessary, but friends have rescued me, held my head up. Friends have been necessary to my survival.
