Friendship

“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly:

and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”

(Proverbs 18:24)

How do you describe a friend? There never seems to be a word, or words, big enough. It’s just too big a subject to use words already written, sung or spoken. I will ask largely for a new word.

I have a friend who
sticketh closer than a brother
You ask who that may be
I say He is like no other
His name above all names
too holy to pronounce
I just call him Jesus
He's been my friend
Since I was but a child

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art … It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”

C.S. Lewis

“I no doubt deserved my enemies, but I don’t believe I deserved my friends.”

Walt Whitman

  1. I identify with Walt Whitman on this right away and hope CS Lewis is reaching for a point. Perhaps friendship as a concept is unnecessary, but friends have rescued me, held my head up. Friends have been necessary to my survival.
